Abstract

310,825. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Jan. 28, 1928. 4: 4<1>-Dioxydiphenylcyclohexane and its homologues are obtained by condensing phenol or an ortho-substituted homologue thereof with cyclohexanone or an alkyl derivative thereof, by means of a hydrohalic acid in the presence of a diluent. The hydrohalic acid may be employed in aqueous solution, or in solution in an organic solvent, or the gaseous acid may be passed into the reaction mixture. In examples, (1) 4: 4<1>-dioxydiphenylcyclohexane is obtained by condensing phenol with cyclohexanone by passing dry hydrochloric acid gas through the solution in glacial acetic acid, or by warming with glacial acetic acid and an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid, (2) 4: 4<1>-dioxy-3: 3<1>-dimethyldiphenylcyclohexane is obtained by warming cyclohexanone with ocresol, glacial acetic acid, and hydrochloric acid solution, and (3) 4: 4<1>-dioxydiphenyl-4<11>-methylcyclohexanone is similarly obtained from pmethylcyclohexanone and phenol. The products are intermediate for the production of dyestuffs and pharmaceutical products. Specification 276,518 is referred to.
