Abstract

A mixture of aromatic amines is treated with an aqueous agent capable of converting the amines into salts, or a mixture of salts of different aromatic amines is treated with an aqueous agent capable of converting the amine salts into free bases; in either case the agent is added in such amount that the product consists of a mixture of free bases in an organic phase and a mixture of salts in an aqueous phase, and these phases are separated and treated to recover a desired amine or amines which predominates in one of the layers. The starting material may itself be a mixture of amines and salts, and a similar mixture may be used as the agent, in which case double decomposition occurs. Alternatively the agent is (1) an acid such as sulphuric, hydrochloric or acetic, or an acid-reacting substance such as sulphur dioxide or an acidic salt (e.g. an amine salt); or (2) an alkali hydroxide or carbonate or an amino compound. The separated amine can be purified by standard methods, e.g. fractional solidification or distillation, steam distillation, molecular distillation, selective conversion into salts and recrystallization of the free bases or salts. The process can be applied to mixtures of isomeric amines or of non-isomeric amines or of both. The amines can be N-substituted provided they are still capable of forming salts. Examples show the separation of mixtures of (1) o- and p-anisidines, (2) o-, m- and p-toluidines, (3) o- and p-chloroanilines, (4) o-chloroaniline and p-anisidine, (5) aniline and dimethylaniline, and (6) a - and b -naphthylamines. Other mixtures that can be separated are those of o- and p-phenylenediamines.
