Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of medicines, economically in an industrial scale, by reacting an α, β-dihalogenopropionitrile with phthalimide or its alkali metal salt, in the presence of a base in a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The titled compound useful as an intermediate of an amino acid or medicine, by reacting an α,β-dihalogenopropionitrile (e.g. α,β-dichloro- or dibromo-propionitrile) with (a) phthalimide in the presence of a base (e.g. hydroxide of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal) or with (b) an alkali metal salt of phthalimide, in a solvent at pref. 30W100°C for 2W15hr. As the starting material, α,β-dichloropropionitrile, can be easily prepared by adding chlorine to acrylonitrile, the process has remarkable industrial significance.
