Abstract
p-Amino derivatives of N : N-dialkylanilines in which an N-alkyl group may be substituted by a hydroxy group and where the benzene ring may be substituted by alkyl or phenyl groups, are prepared from the corresponding N : N-dialkylaniline by treatment with nitrous acid in an acid medium, setting free the resultant p-nitroso compound with caustic alkali, and catalytically hydrogenating it in a water-insoluble solvent, e.g. the initial N : N-dialkyl-aniline. Suitable starting-materials are N : N-dialkyl toluidines and xylidines. In the examples there are prepared: (1) p-amino-dimethylaniline; and (2) N(-b -hydroxyethyl)-N-ethyl-p-phenylenediamine.
