Abstract

622,811. Permanent magnet generators. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ELLIS, J. H. April 15, 1947, No. 9951. [Class 35] A telephone magneto has a diametrically magnetized cylindrical rotor 30 and a stationary armature member 10 comprising a single casting which forms a tubular casing with polepieces 11, 12 carrying the armature coils 56, 57. The casing 10 has non-magnetic end covers 13, 14 located by dowels 15 and carrying a manuallydriven spindle 16 and the rotor shaft 27 in self-aligning, self-lubricating bearings 17, 18 and 28, 29 respectively. A hub 20, having a pair of radially disposed rollers 21, is fixed on the shaft 16, and a spring 25 urges the hub axially towards a driving gear 33, mounted freely on the shaft and engaging teeth 32 on the rotor shaft. When the handle 19 is turned, the resistance of the rotor retards the gear 33 so that the rollers 21 on the collar ride up a cam surface 34 and displace the shaft towards the left against the pressure of spring 25, and thus operate the spring charge over contacts 40, 41 and 42 to connect the appropriate circuit. The driving gear 33 also carries stop-pins 35, 36 which engage the hub to limit the relative displacement. The spring contacts are mounted on an insulating block 37 and are covered by a shield 49 which may be transparent.
