A tachogenerator comprises a body member provided with means for attachment to an anchoring device, a permanent magnet 4 fixedly mounted on the body member, an armature encircling the magnet 4 rotatably mounted on the body member for rotation about the magnet and coupled to a shaft the speed of rotation of which is to be measured, a commutator 16 rotatable with the armature and connected to the armature windings 14 and brushes 22 mounted on the body member and coacting with the commutator to provide electrical output leads from the commutator and thus the armature. The stationary body member comprises a main shaft divided into three sections 1a 1b 1c of different cross-section, an end plate 9 to which the magnet shaft 1 is keyed and a brush gear housing 11. Armature windings 14 are mounted within a cylindrical armature housing 12 built up from an end cap 12a a spacer 12b and an end cap 12c, the end cap 12a being shaped for attachment to the shaft the speed of which is to be measured and the end cap 12c being integrally formed with a sleeve portion 15 which surrounds the shaft portion 1a and carries the commutator 16. Connecting leads between the armature windings 14 and the commutator bars pass through holes in the end cap 12c and commutator spacing washer 16a which with the commutator is locked against rotation relative to the sleeve 15. The brush gear housing 11 fits about a boss 9a on the end plate 9 which is circular and coaxial with the shaft 1 so that orientations of the brush gear housing relative to the magnet 4 can be varied. In order that the body portion remains stationary the end plate 9 is held in position against rotation by clamping to a metal strip 26 formed with an anchorage hole 29. In operation leads are taken from the two brush holders 20 to a voltmeter the reading of which provides an indication of the speed of rotation of the shaft. Variations in magnetic flux density due to changes of temperature may be compensated for by means of a variable temperature sensitive resistance coil wound around the magnet shaft.
