622,729. Embossing. DETREZ, R. Aug. 10, 1945, No. 20525. Convention date, July 7, 1944. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Groups XVII and XXIX] Hydraulic movement in a machine for performing reciprocatory operations on articles supported thereby (e.g. impressing articles by means of a die, or capping or corking bottles) is locked during the said operation by a sealing means temporarily interposed in the passage of liquid between an actuated piston of the hydraulic system on the one hand and the source of pressure on the other. The invention is shown applied to a bottlecorking machine in which a bottle is raised to the corking position by hydraulic piston 3 attached to bottle rest 2. Supply of pressure liquid to the piston through pipe 5 is then cut off during the corking operation by a sealing piston 9 reciprocated by a cam 11. Liquid trapped in the lower part of cylinder 4 prevents the bottle from yielding during the descent of corking plunger 8. In another embodiment, the bottle rest is fixed and the corking head is lowered hydraulically; during the corking operation, two cam-operated valves simultaneously seal the pipes leading to both sides of the hydraulic piston locking the corking head against either up or down movement.
