Abstract

553,898. Drilling-machines. MEAD, T. E. July 11, 1942, No. 9666. [Class 83 (iii)] Pillar drilling-machines have adjustably located means mounted on the pillar and carrying fluid pressure operated clamping means for the work. A split collar 12 vertically adjustable on the pillar 10 carries a lateral clamping boss 23 for a rod 21 carrying a cylinder 27 having a piston 48 which is a combined pressed and shrunk fit on an oversize part of the rod 45 in proximity to a shoulder 47. Cup leather packing 49 is provided. The tail end of the rod is sealed by an extension 39 of the cylinder and pressure is admitted at 28 under the control of a three-way cock. The rod is guided towards its other end by an extension 41 of the cylinder cover that houses a return. spring 44. The rod may engage the work directly but as shown carries an offset pressure foot 52.
