Abstract
640,548. Heel - attaching machines. POCKIN, H. W., and BROMLEY, J. H. Jan. 26, 1948, No. 2264. [Class 17(i)] In a heel attaching or building machine, hydraulically operated clamping means are provided by which the heel and shoe are clamped with an adjustable pressure. The hydraulic fluid is sealed in the pressureapplying position while the attaching pins are driven against the pressure of the sealed hydraulic fluid only. A heel clamp F vertically above a heel rest R is attached to a cylinder D in which is a fixed piston E. Fluid pressure is supplied through a control valve C from a pump B to an axial passage in the piston E to move the cylinder D and clamp F towards the rest R. The control valve C operated by a treadle K through a rod J then seals the fluid under pressure in the cylinder D while the pins are driven, after which the control valve is returned to cut off pressure from the cylinder D so that the latter can be returned by a spring Y up to a stop T. A reservoir A in the return from the valve C to the pump B keeps the system primed. The cylinder D has two bores of different area so that if a high heel is clamped as in Fig. 6 the fluid enters the space SP to give a light pressure while if the clamp F is lowered further for a shorter heel the fluid enters the space ST to give greater pressure. The two bores can be connected by small bores to prevent air locks and oneway ball valves for relieving the pressure from ST may be provided as shown in Fig. 6. In operation, a shoe and heel are positioned on the rest R and the treadle K depressed which through a latch L and rod J operates the valve C to admit fluid to the cylinder D to clamp the heel. Further depression operates the valve C to seal the fluid in the cylinder D and at the same time through a collar P and a lever Q engages a single cycle clutch to operate a driving plunger I by an eccentric N. A cam surface S then engages a lever M which withdraws the latch L to allow 'the rod J to be returned by the action of a spring W and the lever Q to disengage the clutch. The parts thus return to their initial position ready for the next operation. Specification 544,315 is referred to.
