[Class 17 (i)] Heel clamping means, in a heel attaching or heel building machine comprises hydraulic means for lightly clamping the heel, means for thereon trapping the hydraulic fluid, and mechanical means for applying further clamping pressure through the medium of the trapped fluid. The upper member b of the clamp is reciprocated by a lever c actuated by a piston e in a cylinder carrying a spigot h' in screwthreaded engagement with a sleeve h bored to engage a plunger h<SP>2</SP> carried by an eccentric strap g. On work being.positioned a treadle o is depressed, thus actuating a valve rod n admitting fluid at low pressure to the cylinder. When the work has been lightly clamped the treadle is further depressed, locking the fluid in the cylinder and tripping a clutch rotating the eccentric, thus applying the final pressure. Bodily movement of the cylinder by the eccentric is adjusted by rotation of the sleeve h and consequent variation of a gap above the plunger h<SP>2</SP>.
