Abstract

815,375. Winding machinery brakes. BLACK, G. A. Jan. 17, 1957 [Jan. 17, 1956], No. 1543/56. Class 103 (1). Braking apparatus for use in colliery and like winding equipment includes a hydraulic intensifier unit E, which produces a high fluid pressure operation in the cylinder C against the ram B, which acts against springs SN to govern the application of brake shoes or the like, not shown, the piston L of the intensifier unit being acted upon by fluid at a relatively low pressure generated by pump G and controlled by valve D. In operation, pressure fluid from the pump G first raises the piston L of the unit E to its full extent and then becomes operative in the space between the two ends of the " dumb-bell " piston valve in the control valve D. If the hand lever HL is so moved as to cause the rod J to move downwardly, through the central passageway in the piston valve F, FA, the return flow of fluid to the drain tanks TR is blocked off at passage P and a pressure is communicated from port b to the top of the intensifier unit E, so as to produce a high pressure in cylinder HE for operating the brake. This form of operation enables the advantages of high-pressure operation as outlined in Specification 702,260 to be obtained in the case of small winders, when the cost of high-pressure pumps would be prohibitive.
