Class 72 [Also in Group XXII] A machine, e.g. a quenching press of the kind disclosed in Specification 605,510, comprises a stationary support 31, Fig. 1, a member 29, Fig. 3, reciprocable thereon, a workpiece-carrying arm 28 arranged for angular motion relative to the member about an axis extending in the direction in which the member is reciprocable, and also to move rectilinearly relative to the member 29 in said direction, thereby to enable the arm to carry a workpiece W between a loading station to an unloading station. The support is secured on the machine frame 10 and carries a piston and cylinder 51, 52 connected by rod 53 to the member 29. The arm carries a sleeve 43 and has a cam 48 engaging a helical groove 47 in member 29, a spring 54 resisting relative rectilinear movement between the arm and member until piston 51 has raised them together to cause the sleeve 43 to abut end face 84. Thereafter relative rectilinear movement occurs and the arm is turned, keys 42, 45 constraining the sleeve and member to rectilinear movement. The arm carries pivoted fingers 32 urged by a spring 36 to release position and contracted to grip a workpiece by pressure fluid applied through pipe 39 to raise piston 37. The movements of this work-handling apparatus are controlled automatically by the machine, the control system comprising a source S. Fig. 6, of compressed air connectible through a solenoid actuated valve 68 to a reservoir 72 of hydraulic fluid thereby to raise piston 51, or to the space above the piston to lower same. The source is also connectible through a solenoid-actuated valve 69 to the pipe 39. Metering valve 74 controls the speed of movement of piston 51, and a pressure-actuated switch 76 in the electrical part of the control system is supplied through a bleed valve 77.
