Abstract
Streptomycin sulphate of increased purity is prepared from streptomycin hydrochloride by bringing the impure streptomycin hydrochloride and the sulphate of an organic base, such as pyridine, triethylamine, aniline or dimethylaniline, into common solution in water, a lower aliphatic alcohol, or a mixture of water and a lower aliphatic alcohol and, where water or a liquid consisting mainly of water is used, adding a water-miscible solvent to precipitate streptomycin sulphate. The solutions of the impure streptomycin hydrochloride and the sulphate of the organic base may be made separately and mixed together, or the streptomycin hydrochloride or a solution thereof may be added to a suspension of the sulphate of the organic base in water. With solutions of streptomycin hydrochloride containing less than 100 units per mg. it is advantageous to add the water-miscible organic solvent in portions and to retain those portions of precipitate showing enhanced antibiotic activity. In examples, streptomycin sulphate is prepared from the hydrochloride by treatment with (1) pyridine sulphate in methyl alcohol; (2) pyridine sulphate in aqueous methylated spirit; (3) pyridine sulphate in water; (4) triethylamine sulphate in water; (5) aniline sulphate in water; (6) dimethylaniline sulphate in water and (7) and (8) pyridine sulphate in aqueous ethyl alcohol.
