Abstract

620,859. Velocity-modulated tubes. WEST. INGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 27, 1947, No. 2476. Convention date, June 26, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] A velocity modulation device in which the electron flow is radially inwards from a circumferential cathode consists generally of concentric cylinders 11, 12, 13. Outer cylinder 11 contains an annular cathode 20 heated by an annular filament coil 19 connected in segments across bus-bars 17. Walls 14, 27, 15 define two concentric annular resonators. Washerlike plates 23 define a field-free space 22 bounded by an outer and inner ring of grids 33. The electrons are finally collected by the central electrode comprising a plurality of pyramidal cavities 38, a cooling medium circulating through inlet and outlet pipes 40, 39. To make provision for tuning, the resonator walls 14, 15 are tapered and have corrugations parallel to the axis to render them flexible and resilient. The outer wall 14 is encircled by a band 62 which can be moved axially by an adjustment screw device. As it moves inwards, wall 14 is compressed, reducing the outer grid gap 24, the wall expanding again as band 62 is moved outwards. A similar band 64 engages the inner wall 15 to vary grid gap 25. A simpler modification without the tuning means is also described (Fig. 2, not shown).
