Abstract

768,596. Velocity-modulated tubes. EITELMcCULLOUGH, Inc. March 28, 1955 [July 20, 1954], No. 8976/55. Class 39(1). A klystron tube is made up of a series of sub-assemblies which are separately fabricated and later joined at seals spaced along the axis of the envelope. The tube shown comprises an electron gun 2, a collector electrode assembly 3 and a drift tube made up of sections 4, 6, 7 and 8 of a metal such as copper separated by gaps which are bridged by cavity resonators each comprising a pair of metal end wall discs 29 and a cylindrical insulating wall 31. The cathode 12 and focussing electrode 16 of the electron gun 2 are mounted on a stem to which is sealed a metal flange 18. A further metal flange 19 is brazed to the copper anode 13 which is in turn brazed to drift tube section 4. The collector assembly 3 comprises a copper collector electrode 22 brazed to drift tube section 8 and having a metal exhaust tubulation 25 which is pinched off. The collector electrode 22 may be cooled by a water jacket 27. The walls 29 are brazed to the drift tube sections as shown and each wall has brazed thereto a flange 33 and is cut away adjacent the flange to leave a spacer ring 38 projecting from the wall. The ends of the cylinders 31, which are preferably of a ceramic such as alumina, are metallized and metal flanges 32 are brazed thereto. To complete the tube the various sub-assemblies are moved together so that the flanges 18 and 19, 32 and 33 rest together with the flanges 32 abutting the spacer rings 38. The edges of the flanges are then welded together while rotating the tube about its axis 37. The cavity resonators are provided with external extensions (not shown) which may comprise split rectangular metal boxes having sliding end walls for timing purposes.
