Abstract

620,499. Electric resistance heaters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RYCROFT. J. L. July 31. 1946, No. 22825. [Class 39(iii)] The heater e.g. an immersion heater comprises one or more loops 2, 3 of resistance wire supported in and spaced from an elongated casing 1 by powdered insulating material, terminals 17 for the resistances being arranged at one end of the casing; and the looped end of the resistance is carried at the other end of the casing by a slotted separate insulating saddle 24 held by a U-shaped metal cross member 25 in the casing. The steatite saddle 24 has two crossed slots 30, 31 at different depths for 'the two looped wires under tension and a further slot for the U-member 25, the ends of which engage behind a shoulder 28 on the casing. Magnesia powder is poured into the brass or aluminium casing, which is then swaged or drawn to compress the powder. One end 5 of the casing is closed over a metal disc 4 and the other end by two steatite insulators 6, 7 which are pierced to carry connection strips 17 welded to the resistance wires. The end 8 of the casing is turned over a shoulder 9 of the insulator 6 and carries a pin 10 to lock the heater in an outer casing in a water tank. The other ends of the connection strips 1 7 are welded to hooked lugs 21 on two plates 20 each screwed into a recess at the outer end of the insulator 7.
