Abstract
619,287. Locomotive engine cylinders. MARTEN, E. W., and ASSOCIATED LOCOMOTIVE EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35515. [Classes 122 (i), 122 (ii) and 122 (v)] A locomotive engine cylinder wherein the barrel 1 has a lateral flange 2 for securing it to the locomotive and a platform 19 on its upper surface to receive a cam-box for operating vertical admission and exhaust poppet valves, is provided with a longitudinally extending live steam chest 3 and steam admission valves closely adjacent to and at the opposite side of the barrel to the lateral flange. The steam chest has inlets 11 and horizontal flanges 12 at each end and communicates through inlet valve seats 9 with intermediate chambers 7 disposed at each end of the cylinder and in constant communication with the ends of the barrel. Separate exhaust chambers 4 at each end of the cylinder communicate through exhaust valve seats 10 with the intermediate chambers, and discharge through ports 6 in the lateral flange. A removable table 13 may be fixed to the cylinder to receive the cam-box during repairs. The lower ends of the valve spindles are under steam pressure through passages 28 to maintain the valves against their seats, and the exhaust valve spindles rest in stuffuig-boxes 23 formed in two parts 24, 25 secured together and containing metal packing washers with side clearance to facilitate valve spindle alignment.
