Abstract
618,688. Liquid-fuel burners. BALLANTYNE, D. H. Sept. 16, 1946, No. 27736. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] In a gas turbine of the kind in which liquid fuel at high pressure from a fuel pump is injected into a combustion chamber and a torch igniter is provided, the fuel supply for the torch igniter is derived from the delivery side of the fuel pump and means are provided for defining a predetermined maximum attainable pressure of the torch igniter fuel supply which pressure is low as compared with the maximum fuel pump delivery pressure and is substantially independent of that pressure. A combustion chamber 10 comprising an air casing and a flame tube 11 carries a main; burner 12 and a torch igniter 13 consisting of an atomising jet and a sparking plug. The torch igniter is supplied with fuel by a pipe 18 which is connected through a flow restrictor 19 to the delivery side of a fuel pump 16 supplying fuel at a maximum pressure of 1,000 1bs. per square inch to the main burner 12. The torch igniter supply pipe 18 is also connected through a spring-loaded relief valve 20 set to operate at a pressure difference of 30 to 40 lbs. per square inch to the inlet side of the fuel pump 16 or as is stated in the Provisional Specification, to the fuel tank. An electromagnetically-operated valve controls the flow of fuel to the torch igniter and can open only when the sparking plug is operating. A throttle valve 22 controls the flow of fuel to the main burner.
