Abstract

730,647. Gas turbine plant; jet propulsion plant; centrifugal pumps. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. Jan. 30, 1953 [Feb. 6, 1952; March 14, 1952], Nos. 3108/52 and 6643/52. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). [Also in Group XI] A gas turbine or jet propulsion engine fuel system comprises a main centrifugal fuel pump, a turbine driven by fuel from the main pump driving an auxiliary fuel pump and a valve responsive to fluid pressure for controlling the supply of fuel to the turbine. In the arrangement shown a main centrifugal fuel pump a driven by the engine supplies fuel through control means c and non-return valve g to swirl type main burners d. An auxiliary centrifugal fuel pump h driven by a turbine k supplies fuel to pilot swirl type burners i. The pump h is supplied with fuel from the main pump through a passage j. The turbine k is driven by fuel from the main pump supplied through a passage o and a control valve p. The turbine discharges through a pipe m to the intake of the pump a or the supply tank. The valve p is controlled by a spring s and a diaphragm u which is responsive to the pressure difference between the inlet of the pump a and the discharge of the pump h. In a modification the pumps a and h supply fuel to the swirl chambers of a duplex burner or to a single swirl chamber of a burner. In another modification the pump h is of the gear type. In a further modification, the auxiliary fuel pump is used to circulate fuel through the swirl chambers of burners of the spill type. In this arrangement, the main fuel pump may supply the fuel direct to the burners or may inject the fuel into the auxiliary fuel pump circuit. The auxiliary fuel pump may be supplied with fuel from any other source.
