Abstract

616,114. Grinding razor - blade strip. FAIREST, Ltd., M., FAIREST, M., and DICKINSON, E. V. Aug. 28, 1946, No. 25742. [Class 60] A machine for grinding the edges of steel strip in the manufacture of wafer-type safety razor blades has the strip guide comprising a guide bar adapted to lie between the strip and the grinding head and to leave one edge of the strip exposed to the grinding head, and a guide block adapted to press the exposed edge of the strip against the grinding head, the guide block being capable of withdrawal from the side of the guide remote from the grinding head. In a machine for grinding strip having two friction guides 19A, 19B carried on springable brackets 20 and movable towards or away from grinding heads 11 by plungers 21 engaged by cams 23, each guide comprises a tie bar 35, Figs. 3, 5, secured across the upper ends of the support brackets 20 and slotted at 36, in line with each grinding head, to receive two holders 37 for guide blocks 38. The holders 37 are flanged at 40 and are held in position by a bridge-piece 41 bolted to the tie bar 35. Above the lefthand guide block 38 (Fig. 3) a guide bar 44 is fitted to a guide plate 48 attached to the bar 35, the lower tapered end of the bar 44 overlapping the block 38 so that strip may pass freely across the face of the block and have its upper edge covered by the bar 44 and its lower edge presented, by the block 38, to the grinding head. A similar guide bar is provided for the right-hand guide block 38, but secured below the block so as to project upwardly, both guide bars 44 overlapping in the middle of the guide. The strip is guided endwise into and out of the guide by edge guides 51 and is backed, where it does not contact the grinding wheels, by fixed guides 54, 55. When one edge of the block 38 becomes worn, it may be inverted by removing the holder and inverting and replacing it, when this edge is worn the block may be reversed to present one of its rear edges to the strip.
