Abstract
614,403. Gearing for stopping machinery. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Aug. 22, 1945, No. 21540. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In the transmission .system for aeroplane propellers described in Specification 614,402, means, operated by the reversal of torque in the flexible coupling, are provided to disconnect the drive from a defective engine. Reversal of torque in the flexible rubber coupling 64 allows an abutment 183 of a recess 80 to contact a projection 180 on the stub-shaft 176. Shaft 176 turns and, through gears 174, 172, rotates the sleeve 156 against the action of the spring 183<1>. A threaded portion 170 on a stud 158 fixed to end cap 160 of shaft 28 co-operates with the threaded bore of the sleeve 156, whereupon the sleeve is moved axially and the head 181 of the stud 158 contacts the switch 154 to energize a solenoid 148 and so rotate a valve 145 to cut off the supply of pressure fluid to the clutches A and B.
