Abstract
689,211. Positive clutches. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Aug. 15, 1951 [Oct. 24, 1950], No. 25879/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXIX] A motor driven valve comprising an electric motor 8, Fig. 1, driving a valve stem 13 through a worm 6, a worm wheel 7 and gearing 17, 9, 10, 11, has an over-riding manual control including a clutch connecting the worm wheel 7 and pinion 17, operable manually should the current supply to the motor fail, whereby the stem may be moved by a hand-wheel 22. The clutch comprises balls 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, held in recesses 14, 14' in the central bore of the worm wheel by a rod 18 connected to the wheel 22. The balls are carried in radial holes 16, 16' in a part of the pinion which projects into the bore. To disengage the clutch, the rod 18 is pushed against a spring 23 until projections 24 engage slots 25 in the pinion 17 and a reduced part 26 of the rod is brought adjacent the balls. By turning the wheel 22, the pinion 17 will move the gears 9, 10, 11 and stem 13 while the balls will fall out of the recesses 14, 14'. On resumption of the current supply and release of the wheel 22 the motor will rotate the worm wheel until the recesses 14, 14<SP>1</SP> are aligned with the balls, and then the spring 23 will force the balls outwardly to re-engage the clutch and disengage the projections 24 from the slots 25. The stopping and starting of the motor may be controlled thermally.
