Abstract
614,153. Operating clutches. NEWTON, E. P. (International Button Hole Sewing Machine Co.). July 10, 1946, No. 20641. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group VII] A clutch 37. driving a button-sewing machine is automatically disengaged at the end of a cycle of operations of the machine by a control drum 210 which may be driven at different speeds and which has means for actuating the clutch alternatively after one revolution or one or more sub-multiples of a revolution of the drum, so that the length of a cycle may be readily varied. In the arrangement shown, the drum 210 is rigid with shaft 189 which is adjustable endwise into any of six positions and is driven from a worm gear 128 on the main shaft of the machine directly in three of the positions and through countershaft reduction gearing in the other three positions. The drum is provided with four projections 212 which are equally spaced on its circumference, but are of different axial length so that according to the axial position of the drum a dog 216 on the clutch-disengaging gear is actuated once, twice, or four times in each revolution of the drum; the dog has two noses, coming into effect respectively in the first three and the second three axial positions of the drum.
