Abstract
612,076. Doors for resisting fluid pressure. SEMET-SOLVAY CO. June 29, 1946, No. 19519. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1945. [Class 123(i)] A self-seating closure, especially for an opening in a coking chamber, which provides for ready replacement of the sealing edge without dismantling the remainder of the door closure parts, has a grooved holder which surrounds the opening, a flexible replaceable sealing blade being frictionally held in the groove and being readily removable therefrom, the blade having a sealing edge extending beyond the holder. In the coking chamber closure shown in Fig. 1, the door is provided with a diaphragm plate 22 having a grooved holder bar 28 welded or otherwise secured along its marginal edge so as to surround the opening to the coking chamber 10. The holder bar 28 is made in two similar parts, 31 and 32, which are positioned on the plate so that the grooves therein are mutually displaced a lateral distance equal to the width of the groove, whilst the sealing blade is also made in two U-shaped portions 37 and 39, the portion 37 fitting into the upper groove and the portion 39 into the lower, the blades being held in the grooves by direct frictional engagement with the sides thereof, and slidably engaging and overlapping at their ends as shown in Fig. 4, thus allowing for expansion of the blades whilst maintaining the continuity of the sealing edge. To prevent expansion buckling the blades, they are made slightly shorter than their respective grooves, allowing an expansion space 38. Bolts 27 are provided at points around the periphery of the plate 22 so that the sealing edge can be pressed into engagement with the door frame 13, thus providing a substantially gas-tight closure. Specification 470,684 is referred to.
