Abstract
611,559. Vehicle wheels. KELSEY-HAYES WHEEL CO. May 1, 1946, No. 13199. Convention date, May 7, 1945. [Class 144 (ii)] In a divisible wheel-rim of the type comprising a detachable side-flange secured by a split locking- ring fitted in a groove in the rim-base, the locking- ring is formed on one or both of its axial faces with circumferentially-spaced protuberances to engage the detachable flange or the rim-base (or both) whereby flexure of one or more of these members is set up by the assemblypressure of the inflated tyre. As shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, the detachable tyre-retaining flange 11, adapted to slide on the stepped portion 8 of the rim-base, is secured by a split ring 3 seated in the rim-groove 6. Oppositelyconed faces 20, 21 on the ring 3 are adapted to co-operate with an inclined seat 15 on the rimflange. The inner periphery of the ring 3 is formed with alternating projections and recesses whereby, the over-all radial thickness of the ring being slightly greater than the normal distance between the bottom of the groove 6 and the flange-seat 15, the outward displacement of the flange on inflation of the tyre causes distortion of the grooved portion of the rim. In modifications, the locking-ring, which may be of tubular section, is formed with projections on its inner and outer peripheries to effect distortion in both the rim-base and the detachable flange.
