Abstract
642,363. Vehicle wheels. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. March 1, 1946, No. 6388. Convention date, March 8, 1945. [Class 144 (ii)] A divisible rim comprises a main part having a fixed tyre-retaining flange 18, a coned beadseat 22, a stepped base 17, an edge groove 25 bounded by a radial flange 27 of lesser diameter than the tyre beads, and a detachable tyreretaining flange 19 of continuous ring form which is secured by a split ring 20 having a coned seat 23 adapted to extend over the full width of the tyre-bead. The locking-ring 20, which has a stepped seat 28, 29 for the flange 19, is of larger external diameter than the internal diameter of the tyre-bead so that, in emergency, the locking-ring would hold the inflated tyre in position without the flange 19. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the locking-ring has a slot 32 to receive a prising-tool 30 for expanding the ring for assembly or removal, a second tool 31 being engaged between the ring and the flange 19 for axial displacement of the latter to clear the locking ring.
