Abstract
611,437. Starting oil engines. C.A.V. Ltd., BROOK, K., and NICOLLS, W. E. W. April 29, 1946, No. 12807. [Class 7 (iii)] A liquid fuel injection pump has means whereby the control member can on stopping be moved beyond its normal fuel cut-off position to operate means enabling an excess of fuel to be supplied when starting. In Fig. 1, the control member b, resiliently connected to a hydraulic governor c, is shown in its normal cut-off position, and the maximum pump delivery is limited by a stop-plate f co-acting with a stop j depending from the member b. At stopping, the member is further displaced to the right to lift the plate f until a spring catch m retains it. At starting, the stop can enter a hole g in the plate, thus allowing the member b to provide excess fuel. The stop lifts the catch m so that the plate f is returned to its normal position by a spring s acting on the lever k when the member b is moved by the governor c to its operative position after starting. In a modification, the plate f is dispensed with, the stop j co-acting with a hole g in a bent part of the lever k, which also coacts with the catch m. In Fig. 8 the maximum pump delivery is normally limited by a stop 3 co-acting with a stop v on a lever v<1> rotatably mounted on an arm i attached to the control member b. A spring-pressed pin x extending through bores y and w in the arm i and lever v<1> is normally situated as shown, but when the member b is moved back beyond its cut-off position, a stop 2 rotates lever v<1> against a spring until it is horizontal, the pin-head x<1> then projecting into the bore y to retain the lever in this position. The stop 3 now co-acts with the pin x so that the member b can be moved for starting beyond its normal maximum position, the head x<1> being forced out of the bore y so that the lever v<1> can be returned by its spring to its normal inclined position when b is retracted after starting.
