Abstract

610,795. Electrodeposition of tin. TRIGGS, W. W. (Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation). April 16, 1946, No. 11739. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41] In the electrodepositing of tin from aqueous acid tin solutions, sulphoxides (in concentrations of not less than 1 gm. per litre) of the general structural formula OH-R-SO-R<1>-OH, where R and R<1> represent a benzene or naphthalene ring are used as addition agents. Examples are given of the use of paradihydroxydiphenyl-sulphoxide and betadihydroxydinaphthyl-sulphoxide in concentrations of between 2.5 and 5 gms. per litre in baths containing phenolsulphonic acid, cresol sulphonic acid, sulphuric acid or hydrofluoboric acid and the corresponding tin salt One such bath comprises a solution of 136 gm. per litre stannous phenolsulphanate in 62 gm. per litre phenolsulphonic acid with the addition agent present at a concentration of 4 gms. per litre. The current density should be between 55 to 165 amp./sq. ft. at room temperature. Graphs are provided illustrating the range of current density for bright ductile deposits for varying concentrations of addition agents at particular temperatures and values of the bath acidity.
