Abstract

610,542. Piston packing. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 23, 1945, No. 31647. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1944. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In a piston-sealing device comprising a resilient lip 16, Fig. 3, urged by an expander 20 into sealing contact with a cylinder wall 18, the expander is temperature responsive so that its pressure on the lip 16 increases with decreasing temperature. The expander is a split bimetallic ring with its outer element 26 of brass and its inner element 24 of steel or nickel alloy, having a less coefficient of linear expansion. In a modification the expander may be a bimetallic plate 28, Fig. 5, having a plurality of outwardly extending spring fingers 30 which on cooling tend to straighten out and press the lip 16 of synthetic rubber or the like more firmly against the cylinder wall.
