Abstract

609,331. Treating gases or vapours with liquids. DIXON, O. G., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1946, No. 6265. [Class 55(ii)] Packing for use in the treatment of gases or vapours with liquids comprises one or more filamentous sheets, which can be irrigated with liquid, arranged axially in a column with a baffle or baffles to provide one or more tortuous passage for the flow of gas or vapour. The filamentous sheets may have plain, indented or corrugated surfaces and be woven from materials such as wire, glass or slag wool or filaments of synthetic resin preferably in the form of galloon netting. The baffles may be of filamentous material or metal sheet or tape which may be crimped or corrugated. As shown in the Figure the packing comprises four rectangular sheets of copper gauge 1, 2, 3 with series of sheet copper baffles such as 6, 8 and 10 and 5, 7 and 9 arranged between the sheets. The packing may advantageously be wetted by the methods described in Specification 578,309 although when the filamentous material is made from galloon netting such preliminary treatment is unnecessary.
