Class 55 (2) Apparatus for purifying gases as from combustion engines or compressors, or toxic or microbe-laden gases by passage through liquid impregnated material 3, e.g. wool or glass wool, asbestos, carbon, wood, pumice, loose hair, paper, metallic sponges or chips, ebonite, celluloid &c. includes a wick or wicks 7 contained in tubes 6 dripping into the liquid which has passed through the material and returning it for distribution over the upper part. An annular wick may surround the gas outlet tube. In another form a flat panel 4a of material between metal fabric and louvres 6a is wetted from wicks 3a depending from an upper receiver 2a to which liquid is lifted by hand or pumped from a base chamber 8a supplied with liquid from the panel after passage through a filter 9a; unfiltered liquid is evacuated through an outlet 12<SP>1</SP>a. In a cylindrical construction the wicks 17 are disposed in their radial spaces between the filter components 21. A pressure relief valve may be incorporated. The filter material may be varnished and the wicks may be of asbestos, wool, cotton, nylon, metal or glass.
