Abstract
1,068,112. Gas generating units. G. DAVIES and H. A. WALFORD. Oct. 25. 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 40632/62. Heading B1X. A gas generating unit comprises a water chamber (4), a chamber (5) for a component generating gas with water and a passage (7) controlled by a valve (14) operated by the pressure of the generated gas, which permits flow of water vapour to the chamber for said component. As shown in the Figure, to which the numerals refer, a flat circular metal box I has a stressed rubber diaphragm 8 providing the lower boundary of the water chamber, a partition 2 supports calcium hydride, a perforated partition 3 defines with the upper surface a chamber 6 containing glass wool, and the ball valve is operated by rod 15 connected to the diaphragm; a baffle 12 is provided below the offtake tube 11. The lower part of the box below the diaphragm is open to the atmosphere. The water in chamber 4 is absorbed in cotton wool or other absorbent material to provide water vapour in the hydride chamber. A metal bellows may be used in place of the rubber diaphragm. When the gas pressure is low, water vapour passes through the valve into chamber 6 and thence into chamber 5. Hydrogen is generated and if not withdrawn through outlet 11, a back-pressure builds up to close the ball valve. The device may be used in connection with the ignition devices of Specifications 932,392 and 932,393.
