Abstract
A composition for rendering textiles water-repellent comprises an alkaline aqueous colloidal suspension of a zirconyl soap. The composition may contain a carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkali metal or ammonium, or ammonium carbonate-carbamate or paraffin. The composition is prepared by adding an aqueous solution of a water soluble zirconyl or zirconium salt such as chloride, sulphate or nitrate to an alkaline solution of a carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkali metal or of ammonium, or ammonium carbonate-carbamate, this combined alkaline solution is then mixed with an aqueous solution of a water soluble soap, preferably in stoichiometric quantities, whereby the colloidal suspension of a zirconyl soap is formed. Suitable water soluble soaps may be sodium or potassium or ammonium salts of stearic or oleic or palmitic acids or acids from linseed or tung oil or soaps obtained by the interaction of an organic base, e.g. triethanolamine with any of the above mentioned fatty acids.ALSO:A composition for rendering textiles water repellent comprises an alkaline aqueous colloidal suspension of a zirconyl soap. The composition may contain a carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkali metal or ammonium, or ammonium carbonate-carbamate or paraffin. The composition is prepared by adding an aqueous solution of a water-soluble zirconyl or zirconium salt such as chloride, sulphate or nitrate to an aqueous alkaline solution of a carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkali metal or of ammonium, or ammonium carbonate-carbamate, this combined alkaline solution is then mixed with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble soap, preferably in stoichiometric quantities, whereby the colloidal suspension of a zirconyl soap is formed. Suitable water-soluble soaps may be sodium or potassium or ammonium salts of stearic or oleic or palmitic acids or acids from linseed or tung oil or soaps obtained by the interaction of an organic base, e.g. triethanolamine with any of the above-mentioned fatty acids.
