Abstract

A mixture of a suitable liquid (e.g., alcohol or paraffin) and p finely divide iron oxide has the oxide produced by partial oxidation and dehydration, by hot air, of the precipitate of a fibrous salt and an alkali solution. Ferrous sulphate and sodium carbonate are suitable materials for the production of the precipitate which may be mixed after reduction &c., with the suitable liquid in a wide range of proportions by weight. The main constituents of the oxide are ferric oxide 73 per cent. and ferrous oxide 19 per cent. A small percentage, e.g., 0.5 per cent. of a suitable wetting agent (e.g., linseed oil or the mixed fatty acid of wool grease) may be added to the final fluid.
