607,921. Inductances and transformers. HOLZER, R. C. DE. March 9, 1946, No. 7401. [Class 38 (ii)] An inductor comprises a coil having a magnetic core, enclosed in a casing formed of two sections of insulating material hermetically sealed together by cementing, welding or spinning a metal ring round the adjacent edges. A coil 3 or an insulating bush 2 surrounding an iron dust core 1 is hermetically sealed within a casing formed by two insulating parts 4, 5 held together at the edges by the spun metal ring 8, by cement, or by welding. The parts 4, 5 may be of thermoplastic material such as polystyrene, polythene or glass, or of thermosetting plastic material and may be pressed or moulded. Terminal wires 9, 10 with their inner ends moulded in a block of insulating material and connected to the winding as at 12, pass through suitably packed grooves in the end flanges. Rings of magnetic material may be placed at the sides of the coil. In the modification of Fig. 3, the casing comprises a flat disc 15 and a moulded part 16 containing the eccentrically arranged coil, and the spun ring 17 has an extension 18 containing an insulating disc 19 with an eccentric magnetic insertion 20. Rotation of disc 19 varies the value of the inductance. Two or more inductances may be supported by their wire terminals 9, 10 to form a transformer with coupling varied by rotating the inductances on the wires or by bending the wires.
