Abstract

605,248. Knitting-machines. BLACKBURN & SONS, Ltd., G., COTTON, Ltd., W., COOPER, W. A.. and START, E. Dec. 19, 1945, No. 34364. [Class 74(ii)] The thread trapping and severing mechanism of a straight-bar machine comprises a number of fixed members A having openings 4 in which the thread is laid, movable sinker-like members B, disposed alternately between them and adapted to press the thread between the members A, and a cutting blade C. The blade C may be mounted between two of the members A. The members B are arranged in tricks at one end of the sinker sley 2. Prior to a thread going out of action, the movable members B and the cutting blade C are withdrawn and the carrier stops removed by rods 19 which may be controlled through links 22, 25, 26, 27, by a stud 20 on the pattern chain. The thread carrier lays the thread in the openings 4 and is then held inoperative by a locking lever 29 which engages a stop 30 on the carrier. The locking lever may normally be moved into the engaging position by a spring 32 and may be raised to release the carrier by a stud 37 on the pattern chain through links 33, 34, 35, 36. The movable members B are advanced by the slur cock acting on jacks 6a so that the thread is trapped between the movable members B and the thickened ends 1 of the fixed members A. The catchbar advances the blade C when an edge 8 cuts the thread. The catch-bar may withdraw the members B with the sinker jacks, but in order that they may be left in the advanced position to hold the thread, a section 12 of the catch-bar 10 may be arranged to be raised clear of the butts 11, 9 of members B and C and to be lowered to withdraw them when required. The section 12 is carried by a lever 14 pivoted to the catchbar lever 15 and having an extension 16. The extension 16 engages an abutment on the thread carrier 5 as the latter becomes inoperative, to raise the section 12 clear of the butts. Alternatively, the section may be controlled through linkage by studs on the pattern chain giving an arrangement whereby, - threads from a number of carriers may be trapped, the fixed members A having forked spring blades which nold the thread between blades of adjacent members A when the movable members B are withdrawn. In order that a thread carrier may be brought into use with the members B still advanced, each member B may be provided with an opening 18 in which the thread is laid.
