[Class 74 (ii).] In knitting fabrics with solid diamond or like patterns on Cotton's or other straight-bar machines two carrier rods C<1>, C<2> each carrying a set of yarn guides are used to each breadth. The guides on the carrier rod C<1> may be threaded alternately with different colours. By having an extra guide on the carrier rod C<1> for each breadth and shogging accordingly the colours may be alternated vertically and horizontally. The guides on the rod C<2> make the ground diamonds D and may be threaded with the same colour throughout. The triangular areas D<1>, D<2> are made by selvedge carrier rods C<3>. C<4> the inward traverses of which are variably controlled by a band of pattern cards. These with others controlling the rods C<1>, C<2> pass over cylinders mounted at one end of the machine on a common shaft E<2>. The cards operate on pins G<9> carried by bell cranks G<3>, G<4> to which are pivoted droppers G<1>, G<2>. The lower ends of the selected droppers form stops for controlling the traverses of the carrier rods. The inward traverse only of the rods C3, C<4> has to be variably controlled and this is done from a single band of cards. Two bands are required for controlling the rod C<1> to obtain colour alternation. The rod is passed from the control of one band to the other by cam wheels which lift the right-hand droppers and stop corresponding to the left-hand band out of action when the left-hand droppers and stop for the right-hand band are in action and vice versa. The rocking of the cam wheels is controlled by one of the card bands, which also puts in an idle or drawback course after a row of diamonds with colours crossed has been knitted.
