Abstract
761,975. Knitting-machines. TOONE (NOTTINGHAM), Ltd., B. Dec. 4, 1953 [Feb. 26, 1953], No. 5353/53. Class 74 (2). When a splicing yarn feeder 6 is withdrawn, its yarn is caught by a trapper 16, disposed within the needle circle, and is positioned to be taken by the needles for knitting; and, at the junction between the non-knitting part extending from the feeder and the adjacent loop in the fabric, the yarn is engaged and cut by the cutting edge 21 of a cutter blade part which is in a plane substantially perpendicular to the direction of reciprocation of the needles and closely over the immediate rear of the hook of a needle partly raised at a location just after knock-over, and which is operated in timed relation with the change from knitting to non-knitting of the yarn. The yarn enters and is trapped between thick and thin plates 69, 70 of the trapper. The plates are fixed together and to a screw 71 at their upper ends, and the yarn gripping action between them is adjusted by a fine pitch screw 100 bearing at one end on the inner face of plate 70. The yarn engages round the upper tip of a wing 69a on the plate 69, to ensure that the yam end is disposed across the needle line when taken in by the needles and to avoid excess looping of the yarn. The radially positioned cutter 18 is located six needles, say, beyond the knockover station and comprises a fixed part 19 and a slidable part 20 having cooperating cutting edges 23, 21 on parts which are substantially horizontal and close to the fabric, the edges forming a notch the mouth of which is directed along the circle of needles. The part 20 is moved, to cut the yarn, against the action of a spring 27, immediately after each withdrawal of a splicing yarn feeder 6. For this purpose, the guide and cutter are operated by arms 13, 33 pivoted to a reciprocating bar 9 and acting through, respectively, connections 10, 8 and connections 32, 31, 30, 29, 28. The position of part 20 may be initially adjusted by means of a screw. The parts 19, 20 are maintained in face contact by a leaf spring 121 and are mounted on a carrier 120, pivoted at its rear end, to rock in a vertical plane, on a block 24. A spring.63 biases the carrier downwardly to an extent determined by an adjustable screw stop; the cutter can thus yield to any obstruction under the cutting edges and rise and fall with the conventional raising and lowering of the needle cylinder. The cutter is normally maintained inoperative during production of a stocking by a spring 124 which swings block 24 about a pivot 26 to a withdrawn position, and it is swung into operative position when required for splicing, by a cam 36 on a drum 37, acting - through rod 38, bell crank 39, the nose 41 of an arm 56 and an extension 42 of the block 24. The arm 56 is pivoted to the bell crank 39 and is normally held up to its work by engagement of a peg thereon with a step 54 on a lever 52; but should an elevated faulty needle approach the cutter, it engages the inner end 48 of a lever 46 which then trips the lever 52, through a bellcrank 50, and allows the spring 124 to swing the cutter out of operative position, whilst a stop motion is operated, through a pin 58, pivoted arm 59 and rod 61. A latch ring gap closer 105 is so connected to the cutter that, whilst initial movement of the closer in either direction has no effect on the cutter, full movement in one direction causes displacement of the cutter to inoperative position. Cymbals 66 on the feeder 6 grip the withdrawn yarn, to ensure that it shall not be drawn back through the feeder during lowering thereof, to reintroduce the yarn, and are opened, when the yarn has been taken by the needles, by engagement between of the chamfered edge 167 of a member 67. Specifications 653,963 and 742,572 are referred to and Specifications 532,520 and 532,586 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
