Abstract
604,688. Purifying sugar solutions. TATE & LYLE, Ltd., and SIMMONS, C. E. G. Sept. 25, 1945, No. 24879. [Class 127] [Also in Group I] A process for treating sugar solutions with bone char or synthetic resins consists in causing the solid absorbent to flow in countercurrent with respect to the solution and to washing liquid, the travel of the absorbent being provided by an air lift. In the arrangement shown diagram matically, there are three absorption chambers 16, 17 and 18, a sweetening-off chamber 19, and three charwashing chambers 20, 21 and 22. The raw liquor is introduced into chamber 16 through pipe 23. The char absorbent 25 is supplied at the top of the chamber and after passing to the bottom is conveyed by a jet 27 of compressed air, up a tube 28 into a hopper 29 where it is separated from syrup by means of a rake conveyer 30. The char is delivered to the chamber 17 and the syrup is returned by way of pipe 24 to the chamber 16 where it flows with the raw liquor up through the char to a collector 26. Syrup introduced into chamber 17 through pipe 32 together with syrup coming from a hopper 34 associated with chamber 18, flows up through the char to a collector 31. The procedure in chamber 18 is similar to that in chamber 17. The chamber 19 is supplied with wash water from a collector 57 by means of a pump 59 and a pipe 58 and is also supplied through pipe 43 with liquid separated in a hopper 47 from char which is delivered to the chamber 20. The arrangement in chamber 20 is similar to that in chamber 19. Wash water is supplied to chambers 21, 22 through pipes 52, 63 respectively. The char, which has passed through all the chambersby means of air lifts, is delivered finally to a hopper 56 from which it is removed for regeneration. Specification 578,520 is referred to.
