Abstract
741,652. Treating gases with liquids. RUHRCHEMIE AKT.-GES. Aug. 20, 1951 [Aug. 23, 1950], No. 19573/51. Class 55 (2). In a process for washing impurities such as CO 2 , H 2 S or SO 2 from gas or for reacting a constituent of a gas with a liquid, the gas is injected downwardly into the upper layers of the liquid in a series of zones through which the gas and liquid flow in countercurrent, the flow rates of the gas and of the liquid being respectively controlled in accordance with the solubility of the constituent and its rate of absorption into the liquid. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, each zone of the apparatus consists of a container 1 having a liquid inlet 2 from a similar container at a higher level and an overflow 3 to a container at a lower level. A number of partitions 4 are located in the container with their top edges below the liquid level as determined by the overflow and their bottom edges spaced from the container base. Gas from the previous zone enters through a pipe 5 and is injected downwardly through pipes 6 into the liquid in alternate spaces between the partitions. The gas rising in the spaces causes a circulatory flow of liquid around the partitions, the gas discharging to the next zone through a pipe 8. To improve the liquid flow an impeller 10, Fig. 3, may be provided. In another form, Fig. 4, the contact zones are located between partitions 26 in a single vessel 24. Gas is injected downwardly through nozzles 33 disposed in narrow compartments 28a ... c between the partitions 26 and adjacent partitions 25. Liquid flows downwardly in the compartments 28a ... c, and through larger compartments 29a ... c and 30a ... c in which unabsorbed gas separates to pass to the next washing stage through the respective partition 26. The gas flows from zone to zone through pipes 35a ... d.
