682,721. Treating gases with liquids. SUIDA, H. July 31, 1950 [Aug. 16, 1949 ; Aug. 25, 1949 ; Feb. 4, 1950 ; June 7, 1950], No. 19128/50. Class 55 (ii). In a distillation column or gas washer wherein gas or vapour is passed upwardly through bodies of liquid carried on superimposed, perforated trays, the perforations in the trays are in the form of slots which are arranged in radial rows and so shaped that the gas or vapour flows through them tangentially to the tray axis and at a small angle to its surface, thus imparting to the liquid on each tray a uniform, outwardly directed, spiral rotation. Fig. 8 shows two trays of the column. Each consists of a metal disc having radial rows of slots therein, arranged and formed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The disc is surrounded by a weir w which retains a body of liquid thereon. The excess liquid overflowing into a trough r and draining through tubes a into a central container h on the tray below, from which it overflows to supply that tray. The gas or vapour passing up through the trays causes the liquid on each to rotate in a spiral and thus to move across each tray from the inner to the outer weir.
