Abstract

Liquid, e.g. water, is sprayed over a bed, esp. of chopped sugar-cane, pref. carried on a grilled conveyer belt, close to the end of the rectangular treatment area, and is circulated countercurrently via a series at spray heads above the bed, and collectors below the bed, concentrated liquor being taken off, after reheating, from a collector below the solid input hopper. Flow is increased by 30% over known leachers by maintaining a head of liquid over the grilled floor, overflows, comprising pref. lowered panels in the side walls, being provided, which are located above the collectors, and which extend from near top of bed to proximity of floor, at first and last collectors, and over top 1/3 of bed at other collectors.
