Abstract

1355286 Removal of SO 2 ; Ca sulphite PATENTVERWERTUNG-GmbH 4 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 5373/72 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from combustion gases by washing the gases with a circulating solution of NaHCO 3 , and the cleaned gases are reheated by heat exchange with the uncleaned gases. The combustion gases may be filtered to remove dust and passed into the bottom of a container A supplied with NaHCO 3 through nozzles at the top. The solution from A circulates via filter presses to a container B and then back to the nozzles. Container B is drained periodically and supplied with fresh NaHCO 3 and water. The drained solution (NaHSO 3 ) passes to a container C which is supplied first with Na 2 CO 3 to form NaSO 3 , and then with CaCl 2 to form CaSO 3 . The gas spaces in containers A, B and C are connected to equalize pressure, and CO 2 evolved in C passes through B to A and mixes with the cleaned gases to be exhausted together.
