Abstract

In purifying gases from hydrogen sulphide by washing them with an alkaline liquid, e.g. alkali carbonate solution, and regenerating the washing liquid by the introduction of carbon dioxide followed by the removal of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide from a previous cycle of the process is introduced into the spent washing liquid while maintaining the hydrogen sulphide in the liquid and first the hydrogen sulphide, and then the carbon dioxide, is removed; the regenerated liquid and the carbon dioxide being returned to the process. The solution containing hydrogen sulphide may be treated with carbon dioxide in a closed container, the carbon dioxide being forced in below, at or above atmospheric pressure. The sulphuretted hydrogen may then be removed by means of a vacuum at ordinary or slightly increased temperature after which the solution may be boiled to drive off the carbon dioxide and regenerate the solution.
