Abstract

1396839 Removing nitric oxide and dust from gases K AOI 19 March 1973 [10 June 1972] 13059/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] NO and dust are removed from exhaust gases by (a) contacting the heated gases with an active carbon catalyst, (b) adiabatically expanding and externally cooling the resultant gases containing NO 2 and N 2 O 3 , (c) spraying the cooled gases with water or an aq. NaOH soln. to absorb the oxides and then (d) filtering the scrubbed gases to remove dust. Exhaust gases, containing NO and introduced at 2, are firstly heated at 3 and then passed upwardly through the active carbon catalyst beds 6. The resultant gases containing NO 2 and N 2 O 3 are then adiabatically expanded into compartment "a" of the horizontal cylinder 7. The adiabatically cooled gases are additionally cooled by cold air blown through the central conduit 9 by fan 10. The nitrogen oxide content cooled gases is absorbed in water or aq. NaOH soln. sprayed from nozzle 11. The resultant NO 3 ion-containing liquor is discharged via line 12 to sump 13. The unabsorbed gases are passed via the perforated concentric channel 8 to the compartments "c" wherein dust is removed by contact with filter medium.
