Abstract
1334010 Removal of H 2 S from gas streams AMOCO PRODUCTION CO 19 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 21289/71 Heading C1A A process for the recovery of sulphur from a gaseous mixture containing H 2 S comprises (i) forming a mixture of H 2 S and SO 2 in a molar ratio 2 :1, (ii) introducing said mixture at a temperature of 450-600‹ F. into a first catalytic zone 10 having sulphur deposited on the catalyst, whereby sulphur is vaporized therefrom simultaneously with the reaction of H 2 S and SO 2 , (iii) passing the gases from said first zone through a condenser 18 to remove vaporized sulphur therefrom, (iv) passing the cooled gas from 18 to a second zone 44 where it is used to cool hot, freshly regenerated catalyst whilst at the same time reaction occurs between H 2 S and SO 2 in said gas to deposit elemental S on said catalyst, (v) when the gas leaving zone 44 contains more than a predetermined amount of H 2 S and SO 2 reversing the flow of said gaseous mixture through said reaction zones and repeating the above cycle. In a preferred embodiment a third catalytic reactor 68 may be incorporated such that a three-stage system as indicated in the drawing can be operated.
