Abstract

1435619 Treatment of sulphur plant feed gas RALPH M PARSONS CO 29 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 50232/73 Heading C1A An acid gas stream containing water and hydrogen sulphide, for feed to a sulphurproducing process, which also contains hydrogen cyanide and/or ammonia is treated by contacting said acid gas stream with a catalyst comprising at least one metal sulphide wherein the metal is selected from Group Va, Group VIa, the fourth period Group VIII and the two Rare Earth Series of the Periodic Table deposited on a support of silica, alumina, silica-alumina or mixtures thereof at a temperature above 1000‹ F., whereby said hydrogen cyanide and/or ammonia are converted to inert nitrogen. In preferred embodiments the temperature is in the range 1000-2000‹ F., especially 1200- 1500‹ F., the catalyst comprises a sulphide of iron, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum or thorium (or any mixture thereof) on a support of activated alumina, and the proportion of hydrogen cyanide and ammonia to hydrogen sulphide in the feed gas is in the range 1 : 200 to 10 : 1 by volume. Two methods are described of attaining the necessary temperature for the catalytic conversion. In one, the feed gas is passed over the catalyst in a tower which is surrounded by a furnace which maintains the catalyst at a suitable temperature. In the other, the feed gas is first mixed with a hot gas formed by burning a hydrocarbon fuel in air in a hot gas generator. After treatment, the feed gas is subjected to conventional processes (and in particular, the Claus or Stretford processes) for conversion of the hydrogen sulphide contained therein to sulphur.
