Abstract

1479223 Catalytic apparatus GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 9 April 1975 [24 June 1974] 14707/75 Heading B1F [Also in Divisions C4 and C5] Liquid products are produced by passing a slurry of particulate coal and a solvent having hydrogen-transfer properties together with hydrogen through a reaction vessel which is divided into a plurality of closely spaced reaction zones separated by porous partitions, a number of the zones containing a solid particulate catalyst and the other zones forming substantially unobstructed passageways through the reaction vessel; the porous partitions allowing the particulate coal but not the catalyst to pass between the zones. The treatment can be carried out at a W.H.S.V. of 0.25-50, 260-482‹C and 35-700 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> using a catalyst comprising a metal, oxide or sulphide of 2-25 wt % Mo together with Fe, Co and/or Ni, or of 5-40 wt % Ni together with W, on a support such as alumina. Fig. I illustrates a reactor 24 which has zones 32 containing catalyst and catalyst-free zones 30 separated by porous partitions 38 through which the particles of coal in the slurry 22 can pass. Figs. 2-8 (not shown) illustrate reactors in which the catalyst-containing and catalyst-free zones are arranged in various dispositions.
