Abstract

PURPOSE: An adsorbent for the removal of nitrogen oxides which is capable not only of exhibiting a high NOx adsorbing capability in a wide range from low concentration to high concentration but also of exhibiting a high catalytic activity at low temperatures, comprising an acrylonitrile fiber subjected to an oxidation treatment and an activation treatment.
CONSTITUTION: An acrylonitrile fiber containing at least 80 % acrylonitrile, e.g., a fiber consisting of 97 % acrylonitrile and 3 % methyl acrylate, etc., is treated at 200 to 300°C in an oxidative atmosphere and then subjected to an activation treatment at 700 to 1000°C by using water vapor, carbon dioxide, ammonia, etc., to obtain an absorbent for the removal of nitrogen oxides. The adsorbent has 4 to 15 % N and a surface area of 100 to 650 m2/g. The combined use of the adsorbent and ammonia exhibits excellent effect for the removal of NOx and even the simultaneous removal of NOx and SOx and also can raise space velocity to 5 to 10 times as much as activated carbon.
