Abstract

603,542. Smallarms. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., PERRY, C. A., WACKROW, R. D., and URRY, A. S. Oct. 24, 1945, No. 27994. [Class 119] A breech-block mechanism for a firearm comprises a pivoted bifurcated plate 9, a web 11 uniting the two limbs of the plate, and a firing pin 29, Fig. 7, and extractor 23, both carried by the plate on or adjacent to the web. The breech-block shown pivots on a pin 5 on the bottom plate 1 of the firearm, and on this pin also pivots a combined cocking handle and trigger guard 7. The breech-block is held in its retracted position by a pivoted sear 21 having a tooth 19 adapted to engage a notch 17 in the breech-block. The sear is constantly urged in a clockwise direction by a torsion spring 41 which also acts on a pivoted feed tube 59 forming an extension of a tubular magazine 57 in the butt of the firearm. Assuming the gun to be cocked, a pull on the trigger 43 causes a pawl 45 pivoted thereon to rock the sear to release the breech-block which then rotates under the action of a spring 15 lifting the tube 59 as it rotates, the firing pin eventually firing the cartridge in the chamber. The blow-back pressure on the case serves to return the breech-block to the cocked position. Initial cocking is effected by rotating the trigger guard 7 about its pivot, a projection 63 on the guard serving to engage with and rotate the breech-block. A spring-pressed pivoted member, whose position is controlled by a pin 49 on a thumb slide 53, can be set to hold the sear in a position preventing movement of the breech-block, or to a position clear of the sear.
